Woman accuses LAUSD of employment discrimination and harassment

Harassment can turn an otherwise pleasant environment into a nightmare, causing employees to dread going to work. A former employee of the Los Angeles Unified School District in California claims that she could no longer tolerate the employment discrimination she was facing on the job. After being subjected to the abuse for too long, she alleges that she felt forced to leave the job she loved for her own safety.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff worked for 13 years at the Marina Del Rey Middle School as a gym teacher. She claims that she did not try to hide the fact that she was a lesbian, and because of it, she was subjected to anti-gay harassment from students. She alleges that when she would supervise the locker area, she would hear comments from students saying that they needed to be careful while they were changing because a lesbian was watching them.

The plaintiff further alleges that the harassment was not just verbal. She claims that papers were tacked to the locker bulletin board that were offensive, and her car was defaced. The woman was also apparently physically attacked by one of her students. When these incidents were brought to the attention of the school district, it purportedly did not take her claims seriously and did not conduct an investigation.

After continually reporting the events and having them dismissed, the only thing she was told by administrators was to stop being openly homosexual. The plaintiff's lawsuit accuses the LAUSD of not providing her with a safe working environment. The California school district contests the employment discrimination allegations. A statement from the LAUSD says that that the claims are baseless and that it fosters a harassment free workplace. The school district intends on strongly defending itself in court.
